Magnesium is widely studied in relation to stress and anxiety, and its use is supported by both biological plausibility and emerging clinical evidence. Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in neuronal function, neurotransmitter regulation, and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which is central to the body's stress response. Chronic stress is thought to increase magnesium excretion and lower bodily stores, while magnesium deficiency has been associated with heightened anxiety and stress-related symptoms in both animal and human studies.

Several clinical trials have explored magnesium supplementation for stress and mild anxiety. A 2017 systematic review (Boyle et al., 2017) concluded that magnesium appears to have a beneficial role in reducing subjective measures of anxiety and stress, particularly in people who are deficient or have elevated stress. Another double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that magnesium supplementation reduced perceived stress scores in healthy adults (de Souza et al., 2020). However, most studies are of moderate quality, with some methodological limitations and variation in the magnesium forms and doses used.

Overall, while more large-scale, well-controlled clinical studies are needed, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting the use of magnesium as an adjunct for stress management, especially in those with lower baseline magnesium levels or high stress exposure.
