Terpenoids, also known as isoprenoids, are a large and diverse class of naturally occurring organic chemicals derived from terpenes. They are widely present in plants and contribute to their aroma, taste, and color. In the context of supporting the stomach or gastrointestinal (GI) system, there is moderate scientific evidence for their use. Various terpenoids—such as menthol (from mint), carvacrol and thymol (from thyme and oregano), and limonene (from citrus fruits)—have been studied for their effects on digestive health.
Research suggests that certain terpenoids possess gastroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. For example, limonene has been investigated for its ability to reduce gastric acid reflux and protect the gastric mucosa in animal models. Menthol is known to relax smooth muscles in the GI tract, potentially reducing symptoms like cramping and bloating. Some terpenoids also exhibit activity against Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium associated with gastritis and ulcers.
However, most of the evidence comes from preclinical studies (animal models and in vitro experiments) and a limited number of small human trials. While the findings are promising and suggest a beneficial role for some terpenoids in supporting stomach health, more robust clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and determine optimal dosages. Thus, the use of terpenoids for stomach support is supported by scientific rationale, but the evidence is not yet definitive.
