Plantain (Plantago spp.) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly for gastrointestinal health. In various traditional systems, including Western herbalism and some indigenous practices, plantain leaves have been used to soothe the digestive tract, ease irritation, and address issues such as gastritis, ulcers, and mild gastrointestinal inflammation. The traditional rationale is that plantain contains mucilage, a sticky, gel-like substance that can coat mucous membranes and provide a protective barrier in the stomach and intestines, thereby reducing irritation and promoting healing.

However, while these uses are well documented in ethnobotanical literature and herbal texts, there is limited modern scientific research directly validating plantain's efficacy for stomach problems in humans. Some in vitro and animal studies have shown that plantain extracts may exhibit anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, and mild antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically benefit the digestive tract, but robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking. Consequently, plantain's use for stomach support is primarily justified by traditional use rather than scientific validation.
