Evidence supporting the use of: Papaya
For the body system: Stomach
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Papaya (Carica papaya) has a long history of traditional use for supporting digestive health, particularly in tropical regions where the fruit is native. Scientifically, its benefit for the stomach and digestive system is primarily attributed to the presence of the enzyme papain. Papain is a proteolytic enzyme, meaning it helps break down proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids, thereby aiding digestive processes. Several small studies and in vitro experiments have demonstrated the proteolytic action of papain, and some clinical trials have evaluated papaya extracts (often standardized for papain content) in relieving symptoms such as bloating, constipation, and heartburn.
One randomized controlled trial found that a papaya preparation improved symptoms of functional dyspepsia and constipation over 40 days, suggesting a tangible benefit for digestive comfort. Additionally, papaya’s fiber content may help regulate bowel movements. However, while these results are promising, the overall body of clinical evidence remains limited, with few large-scale, high-quality trials. Thus, while there is a scientific basis for papaya’s digestive support—especially due to papain—the strength of evidence is moderate. Papaya continues to be included in supplements and dietary recommendations for digestive wellness, but more rigorous research is needed to firmly establish its efficacy for stomach-related complaints.
