Orchid species (family Orchidaceae) have a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Chinese and Ayurvedic systems. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), certain orchid species such as Dendrobium (commonly called "Shi Hu") are traditionally used to "nourish the stomach," promote the production of body fluids, and relieve dryness and thirst. The use of orchid tubers (like Salep made from Orchis mascula and related species) in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern herbal traditions also sometimes extends to soothing the digestive tract and alleviating gastrointestinal discomfort. However, these uses are largely based on historical practices and anecdotal evidence.
Modern scientific validation for orchid extracts in supporting stomach health is limited. Few clinical or preclinical studies have rigorously examined their effects on the digestive system. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest possible anti-inflammatory or protective effects of certain orchid constituents, but these findings are preliminary and not sufficient for strong scientific endorsement. As a result, while the tradition of using orchids to support the stomach is well-established in some herbal systems, robust scientific evidence is lacking, and the evidence level for this use is low.
