Goldthread (Coptis chinensis) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is primarily valued for its bitter and cooling properties. In TCM, Goldthread is used to "clear heat" and "dry dampness," which are concepts often associated with digestive complaints such as gastritis, dyspepsia, and other stomach-related disorders. The rhizome of Goldthread contains the active component berberine, which is thought to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. However, while berberine has been studied for various gastrointestinal issues, most modern scientific studies focus on isolated berberine rather than whole Goldthread extracts and generally address infections or metabolic conditions rather than direct support of stomach function. The traditional use of Goldthread to support the stomach is well documented in historical herbal texts, but there is limited clinical evidence to rigorously validate its effectiveness for this purpose by modern standards.
