Evidence supporting the use of: Glycyrrhizic acid
For the body system: Stomach
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Glycyrrhizic acid is a primary active compound found in licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), which has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, to support digestive health and soothe the stomach. Historically, licorice preparations have been employed to alleviate symptoms of gastritis, gastric ulcers, and heartburn. The traditional rationale lies in its perceived demulcent (soothing) and anti-inflammatory properties, which are thought to protect the gastric mucosa and promote healing.
Several modern studies, mostly preclinical and a few small clinical trials, suggest that glycyrrhizic acid and its derivatives may have gastroprotective effects. These include enhancing mucus secretion, exhibiting anti-inflammatory activity, and possibly inhibiting Helicobacter pylori growth. However, the bulk of evidence for glycyrrhizic acid supporting the stomach is still rooted in traditional use rather than robust, large-scale clinical validation. As such, while there is some scientific interest and preliminary data, the primary justification for its use remains traditional.
Caution is warranted because chronic consumption of glycyrrhizic acid can lead to serious side effects such as hypertension and hypokalemia, so its use should be monitored, especially in supplement form.
