Gentian (Gentiana lutea) has a long history of traditional use as a digestive tonic, particularly in European herbal medicine. Traditionally, gentian root is used to stimulate appetite and support various digestive processes, including the production of saliva, gastric juices, and bile. This is attributed to its intensely bitter compounds, especially gentiopicroside and amarogentin, which are thought to activate bitter receptors in the mouth and gastrointestinal tract, promoting digestive secretions and motility.

Historical texts and ethnobotanical records from Europe and parts of Asia describe the use of gentian root for dyspepsia (indigestion), loss of appetite, and other symptoms of sluggish digestion. Gentian is a key ingredient in many traditional bitters formulas and was often included in pre-meal aperitifs to prepare the stomach for food.

While there is substantial traditional and empirical evidence supporting gentian’s use for digestive health, modern clinical trials are limited. Some pharmacological studies corroborate its effect on increasing digestive secretions, but robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking. Nevertheless, its long history and plausible mechanism of action lend moderate support for its use as a stomach tonic.
