Aloe vera has been traditionally used for various digestive issues, but there is also a moderate amount of scientific evidence supporting its use for certain stomach-related concerns. Several clinical studies have evaluated aloe vera juice or gel for its effects on gastrointestinal health, particularly in conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constipation, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). A 2018 randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility found that aloe vera syrup significantly reduced symptoms of GERD including heartburn and regurgitation compared to placebo. Additionally, aloe latex, which contains anthraquinones, has established laxative effects, although its use is discouraged due to potential safety concerns.
Some research indicates that aloe vera gel may promote healing of gastric ulcers and has anti-inflammatory effects on the gastrointestinal tract, as demonstrated in both animal studies and limited human trials. The bioactive compounds in aloe vera, such as polysaccharides and glycoproteins, are thought to contribute to these effects by modulating inflammation and supporting mucosal healing.
However, the overall quality of evidence is moderate and sometimes limited by small sample sizes or short study duration. While aloe vera appears to have some beneficial effects on stomach health, particularly in symptom relief for GERD and mild digestive complaints, more rigorous research is needed to fully confirm its efficacy and safety for long-term use in supporting the stomach body system.
