Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to support the Spleen system, which in TCM theory relates to digestion, transformation of food, and energy production. Historically, mugwort is considered warm and acrid, and is believed to invigorate the flow of Qi, stop bleeding, and dispel cold. The herb is commonly used in both decoctions and as moxa (burned on or near acupuncture points) for Spleen-related deficiencies, such as poor appetite, fatigue, abdominal pain, and diarrhea—symptoms interpreted in TCM as Spleen Qi deficiency or Spleen Yang deficiency.

From a scientific perspective, current research on mugwort largely focuses on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties rather than direct effects on the human digestive system as conceptualized in TCM. There is limited clinical evidence supporting its efficacy for these uses in Western medicine, and the TCM concept of the Spleen does not directly correspond to the anatomical spleen or to scientifically defined physiological systems. Thus, the justification for using mugwort to support the Spleen is primarily traditional, relying on centuries of empirical use in herbal medicine, rather than on modern scientific validation.
