Ligusticum wallichii, known as Chuanxiong (川芎) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is widely used in East Asian herbalism. Its primary indications in TCM are to invigorate blood circulation, dispel wind, and relieve pain, particularly for headaches and gynecological disorders. Regarding the Spleen body system, TCM conceptualizes the Spleen as central to digestion and the production of Qi (vital energy). While Ligusticum wallichii is not a classic Spleen tonic like Dang Shen or Bai Zhu, it is sometimes included in formulas aimed at harmonizing the Spleen and Stomach, especially when Qi stagnation and blood stasis are present together. Historical texts such as the “Compendium of Materia Medica” reference its use for digestive complaints, indirectly relating to Spleen function as understood in TCM.

However, there is limited direct scientific evidence to support the use of Ligusticum wallichii for Spleen health as defined by Western medicine (i.e., the anatomical spleen). Most modern research focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective effects, and its role in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular conditions. Thus, its use for Spleen support is primarily justified by tradition within the TCM framework, rather than by scientific studies or biomedical evidence.
