Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) plays a significant role in the maintenance of spinal disc health due to its essential function in collagen synthesis. The intervertebral discs, which cushion and support the spine, have a high content of collagen, particularly in the annulus fibrosus (the tough outer layer of the disc). Vitamin C is a necessary cofactor for the enzymes prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase that stabilize and cross-link collagen fibers, thereby contributing to the structural integrity of these discs.

Scientific studies, including in vitro and animal research, have demonstrated that vitamin C deficiency impairs collagen formation, which can weaken the intervertebral discs and connective tissues. Some observational studies suggest that people with adequate vitamin C intake may have a lower risk of degenerative disc disease, although direct evidence in humans is limited. Additionally, vitamin C’s antioxidant properties may help protect disc cells from oxidative stress and inflammation, factors implicated in disc degeneration.

However, there are few large-scale clinical trials directly linking vitamin C supplementation to improved outcomes in spinal disc health or recovery from disc-related injuries. Thus, while the biochemical rationale is strong and there is some supportive preclinical evidence, the overall level of direct clinical evidence is moderate.
