Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Zinc plays a well-established role in supporting the health and function of the small intestine. Scientific studies have demonstrated that zinc is essential for maintaining the integrity of the intestinal mucosa, modulating immune response, and supporting enzymatic processes involved in digestion and nutrient absorption. Zinc deficiency is associated with impaired gut barrier function, increased intestinal permeability ("leaky gut"), and greater susceptibility to infections and inflammatory disorders of the gut, such as diarrhea and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Clinical trials, particularly in children, have shown that zinc supplementation can reduce the duration and severity of diarrheal illnesses, a major function of the small intestine. Mechanistically, zinc is involved in the regulation of tight junction proteins, which are crucial for maintaining the selective permeability of the intestinal lining. Furthermore, zinc supports the activity of digestive enzymes produced by the small intestine and is important for cellular repair and regeneration in the gut lining. While most studies focus on zinc’s benefits in deficiency states, there is a clear scientific consensus that adequate zinc status is crucial for optimal small intestine structure and function.
