Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in numerous physiological processes, particularly those related to muscle and nerve function. In terms of supporting the small intestines, scientific evidence indicates that magnesium plays a role in gastrointestinal motility. Magnesium ions help regulate smooth muscle contraction in the intestines, facilitating healthy peristalsis and bowel movements. This is particularly evident in the use of magnesium salts (such as magnesium citrate or magnesium sulfate) as osmotic laxatives for relieving constipation, which acts on the intestines by drawing water into the lumen and promoting movement.

However, direct evidence that magnesium supplementation specifically "supports" the small intestine system as a whole in healthy individuals is limited. Most of the clinical research has focused on magnesium’s effect in relieving constipation or in specific conditions where magnesium deficiency impairs motility. There is also some evidence that magnesium deficiency can contribute to gastrointestinal symptoms such as cramping and poor motility, suggesting that adequate magnesium is necessary for normal intestinal function.

Despite these findings, routine magnesium supplementation for general small intestine health in the absence of deficiency or constipation is not strongly supported by high-quality clinical trials. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale for magnesium’s role in small intestine function, the strength of evidence for its use as a broad support supplement for this system is moderate to low.
