Flaxseed is commonly used as a dietary supplement due to its high content of dietary fiber, lignans, and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid. The rationale for supporting the small intestine body system primarily centers on its fiber content. Soluble and insoluble fibers in flaxseed help promote regular bowel movements and can alleviate constipation, which affects the function of the small intestine. Some studies have demonstrated that flaxseed supplementation increases stool frequency and improves stool consistency, suggesting better intestinal transit. Additionally, the mucilage (gel-forming fiber) in flaxseed may offer a soothing effect on the intestinal lining.

However, direct scientific evidence that flaxseed specifically supports the health of the small intestine itself (such as improving nutrient absorption, reducing inflammation, or healing the mucosa) is limited. Most studies focus on general digestive health or on the colon. There are also some animal studies suggesting anti-inflammatory effects in the gut, but robust human clinical trials targeting small intestinal function are lacking.
