Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is supported by scientific evidence as an adjunct for skin health and in the management of certain skin infections, although the evidence is moderate rather than definitive. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant and plays a crucial role in collagen synthesis, which is vital for wound healing and the maintenance of healthy skin. Several studies have demonstrated that vitamin C deficiency impairs wound healing, and supplementation can enhance the repair process. In the context of skin infections, vitamin C’s ability to support the immune system may help the body fight off pathogens more effectively. Topical and oral vitamin C have been investigated for their roles in supporting healing from bacterial and viral skin infections, such as ulcers or herpes simplex lesions, primarily due to its effects on the immune system and tissue repair. However, while there is evidence that vitamin C can promote faster resolution of wounds and may reduce the severity of some infections, it is not considered a primary treatment for skin infections and should not replace antimicrobial therapies when these are indicated.
