Magnesium is recognized for its role in skin health, with some scientific evidence supporting its use in managing dry and flaky skin, but the evidence base remains limited. Magnesium contributes to skin barrier function, hydration, and repair by influencing enzymatic processes and cellular regeneration. Topical magnesium salts (such as magnesium chloride or magnesium sulfate) are sometimes used in creams or bath soaks, with anecdotal and small-scale studies suggesting improvement in skin hydration and reduction in roughness or flakiness. For instance, studies have shown that bathing in magnesium-rich Dead Sea salts can improve skin barrier function and hydration, possibly due to the mineral’s ability to bind water in the epidermis and reduce inflammation. Moreover, magnesium deficiency has been linked to increased skin inflammation and impaired barrier recovery in animal models. However, robust clinical trials specifically investigating magnesium supplementation or topical application for dry or flaky skin in humans are sparse. Most evidence is derived from small clinical studies, in vitro experiments, or indirect findings related to the general importance of magnesium in skin physiology. Thus, while there is a plausible biological mechanism and some preliminary support, more rigorous research is needed to firmly establish magnesium’s efficacy for this indication. Overall, the current scientific evidence can be considered modest but promising.
