Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Platycodon root (Platycodon grandiflorus, also known as balloon flower root or Jie Geng) has a long history of use in East Asian traditional medicine, particularly in Chinese, Korean, and Japanese herbal practices. It is commonly used to support the respiratory system, specifically to help clear phlegm, soothe sore throats, and relieve coughs. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Platycodon root is believed to "open up the lung qi" and is often included in formulas intended to address conditions such as bronchitis, laryngitis, and sinus congestion.

The traditional rationale for using Platycodon root to support the sinuses stems from its reputed ability to promote the discharge of pus and phlegm from the respiratory tract, including the nasal passages and sinuses. TCM practitioners have used it for centuries for symptoms such as sinus congestion, nasal discharge, and other upper respiratory complaints.

Modern scientific research is limited but does show that Platycodon root contains saponins and other compounds that may have anti-inflammatory and expectorant effects, which could mechanistically support the traditional uses. However, robust clinical trials specifically validating its effectiveness for sinus support are lacking, so the rating of 3 reflects strong traditional use with limited but suggestive scientific support.
