For the body system: Sinuses
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly among Native American and early North American settlers, for the relief of symptoms associated with colds, influenza, and respiratory congestion, which often includes sinus discomfort. Traditional preparations involved teas or tinctures made from the aerial parts of the plant, taken to alleviate fever, body aches, and sinus-related symptoms such as congestion and inflammation. The traditional rationale for its use stems from its historical reputation as a "febrifuge" (fever reducer) and "expectorant," which might provide secondary relief to sinus congestion by promoting sweating and facilitating mucus expulsion.
However, while there is a rich ethnobotanical record supporting boneset’s use for general respiratory complaints, there is little direct scientific evidence specifically validating its efficacy for sinus health or sinusitis. Some laboratory studies have shown possible anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating effects of boneset extracts, but these findings have not been directly correlated with relief of sinus conditions in clinical trials. As such, while the traditional use for sinus-related symptoms is well documented, scientific validation remains limited.
