Zinc is sometimes used as a supportive treatment for shingles (herpes zoster), primarily because of its known role in immune system function and wound healing. There is some scientific rationale for its use: zinc is important for maintaining immune competence, and deficiencies can impair antiviral immunity. Several small clinical studies and case reports have evaluated zinc supplementation or topical zinc preparations in patients with herpes zoster or postherpetic neuralgia. Some of these studies have shown that zinc supplementation may reduce the duration and severity of skin lesions and pain, potentially by enhancing local immune response and promoting faster healing of the affected skin. However, the evidence base is limited. The studies conducted to date are generally small, often lack rigorous controls, and results are inconsistent. A few randomized controlled trials suggest modest benefit, but systematic reviews note that the quality of evidence is low and further research is needed. Current clinical guidelines for shingles treatment do not recommend zinc as a primary therapy, but some clinicians may use it as an adjunct, particularly in patients with marginal zinc status. In summary, while there is a plausible biological mechanism for zinc’s use in shingles and limited evidence of benefit, the scientific support is not strong. Zinc should not replace antiviral medications, which are the standard of care, but may be considered as a supplemental measure, especially in those at risk for zinc deficiency.
