Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) has a long history of traditional use for enhancing libido and sexual health, particularly in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine. More recently, scientific studies have investigated its potential effects on sex drive, especially in men and women experiencing low libido.

Several randomized, placebo-controlled trials suggest that fenugreek extract supplementation may modestly increase sexual arousal, desire, and testosterone levels. For example, a 2011 study in healthy males found that a standardized fenugreek extract (600 mg/day) improved sexual arousal and orgasm compared to placebo. Another 2015 study in women reported significant improvements in sexual desire and arousal after eight weeks of fenugreek supplementation. The mechanism is thought to be related to saponins in fenugreek, particularly protodioscin, which may influence hormone levels or sexual function. However, the evidence base remains limited: studies are generally small, of short duration, and sometimes funded by supplement manufacturers, which could introduce bias.

While larger and longer-term studies are needed for conclusive recommendations, current evidence supports a moderate scientific basis for fenugreek’s use in addressing low sex drive, especially when compared to many other herbal remedies. Nonetheless, individuals should consult healthcare professionals before using fenugreek for this purpose, especially due to potential interactions or side effects.
