Zinc has been explored as a supportive treatment for rosacea, largely due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-modulating properties. Several small clinical studies have investigated the efficacy of oral zinc sulfate in reducing rosacea symptoms. For example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (J Am Acad Dermatol, 2006) found that oral zinc sulfate (220 mg twice daily) led to significant improvement in rosacea symptoms compared to placebo over three months. However, the effect size was modest and some participants experienced gastrointestinal side effects. Other studies have yielded mixed results, and the overall quality of evidence remains low, with small sample sizes and methodological limitations. There is some mechanistic rationale for zinc’s use: it may help reduce inflammation and bacterial colonization associated with rosacea, and topical zinc compounds are used in other inflammatory skin conditions. Despite these findings, zinc is not considered a first-line treatment for rosacea and is not universally recommended in clinical guidelines. The evidence is insufficient to strongly justify routine use, but it may be considered as an adjunct in select cases under medical supervision. Thus, the scientific evidence supporting zinc's use in rosacea is limited and of low quality, warranting a rating of 2 out of 5.
