Green tea has garnered interest as a topical and oral adjunct for managing rosacea primarily due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The active polyphenols in green tea, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), have been shown in laboratory and preclinical studies to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduce oxidative stress, both of which are implicated in the pathophysiology of rosacea. Several small clinical studies and case reports suggest potential benefits of topical green tea formulations in reducing the redness and papules associated with rosacea. For example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in 2005 found that a 2% green tea extract cream led to a statistically significant reduction in inflammatory lesions in patients with mild-to-moderate rosacea over four weeks. However, these studies tend to be small and of short duration, and larger, well-controlled trials are lacking.

Although green tea is not a traditional remedy for rosacea in the sense of longstanding folk or herbal applications, its scientific rationale is based on its established anti-inflammatory and antioxidant mechanisms, which are relevant to rosacea's underlying processes. Thus, while there is emerging scientific support, the strength of evidence is moderate at best (rated 2/5), and green tea should be considered as a complementary rather than primary treatment option until more robust clinical data are available.
