Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Magnesium has been investigated as a supportive treatment for rhinitis, particularly allergic rhinitis, due to its potential anti-inflammatory and smooth muscle relaxant properties. Some scientific studies suggest that magnesium may help reduce symptoms of allergic rhinitis by stabilizing mast cells and reducing histamine release, which plays a central role in allergic reactions. Additionally, magnesium is known to modulate immune responses and may help mitigate inflammation in the nasal mucosa.

A few clinical trials have assessed the efficacy of intranasal magnesium sulfate sprays or solutions in patients with allergic rhinitis. For example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in 2012 found that intranasal magnesium significantly improved nasal symptoms and reduced inflammatory markers in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis compared to placebo. However, the number of studies is limited, sample sizes are generally small, and there is variability in dosing and administration methods. Oral magnesium supplementation has not been as well studied for this indication, and evidence supporting its efficacy is lacking.

Overall, while there is some scientific validation for the use of magnesium (particularly as an intranasal solution) in the management of allergic rhinitis, the evidence base is still emerging and not yet robust. More large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to firmly establish its therapeutic role. As such, magnesium for rhinitis receives a moderate-low evidence rating.
