Magnesium is used as a supplement to support or treat Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) based on emerging but limited scientific evidence. RLS is a neurological disorder characterized by uncomfortable sensations in the legs and an uncontrollable urge to move them, often interfering with sleep. The rationale for magnesium supplementation stems from its role in neuromuscular function and the observation that magnesium deficiency can contribute to muscle cramps and spasms. Several small studies and case reports have suggested that magnesium supplementation may alleviate symptoms of RLS, particularly in individuals with low serum magnesium or leg cramps associated with pregnancy. For example, a 1998 double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that magnesium improved sleep quality in patients with periodic limb movements related to RLS. However, larger, well-controlled clinical trials are lacking, and the overall evidence remains weak. Clinical guidelines do not universally recommend magnesium for RLS, but it may be considered in patients with documented deficiency or as an adjunct to other therapies. In summary, while there is some scientific basis for using magnesium in RLS, the evidence is not robust, and further research is needed to confirm its efficacy.
