Selenium is an essential trace mineral that plays a role in reproductive health, particularly in males. Scientific evidence suggests that selenium is necessary for the proper function of selenoproteins, which are involved in antioxidant defense and redox regulation in reproductive tissues. In men, selenium is a component of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which protects sperm from oxidative damage. Several studies have linked adequate selenium status with improved sperm motility, morphology, and overall fertility. For example, a 2011 meta-analysis found that selenium supplementation, especially in combination with other antioxidants, had a positive effect on sperm quality in subfertile men. Additionally, selenium deficiency in animal models has been shown to cause impaired spermatogenesis and infertility. In women, the evidence is less robust, but selenium is thought to support reproductive health by modulating oxidative stress in the ovaries and endometrium. Some studies suggest a correlation between selenium levels and certain reproductive outcomes, but causality has not been firmly established. Overall, while selenium’s role in male reproductive health is supported by moderate scientific evidence, more high-quality, large-scale human studies are needed to clarify its benefits, particularly for female reproductive health. Supplementation should be approached cautiously, as excessive selenium intake can be toxic.
