Dong quai (Angelica sinensis) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine as a tonic for the female reproductive system. It is often referred to as "female ginseng" and is commonly prescribed for menstrual cramps, irregular menstruation, and symptoms of menopause. The root is believed to help balance and nourish the blood, regulate menstrual cycles, and alleviate discomfort associated with menstruation. Traditional formulas often combine dong quai with other herbs for enhanced effects.

Scientific research on dong quai’s efficacy for reproductive health is limited and somewhat inconsistent. Some small studies and animal research suggest that dong quai may have mild estrogenic effects and antispasmodic properties, which could theoretically help with menstrual cramps and menopausal symptoms. However, larger, high-quality clinical trials are lacking, and systematic reviews generally conclude that evidence is insufficient to support its widespread use for these purposes.
