Vitamin C has historically been used as a supportive nutrient in the management of various infections and inflammatory conditions, including prostatitis. The rationale behind its use is largely based on its well-known antioxidant properties and its role in supporting immune function. In traditional and complementary medicine, vitamin C is often recommended to help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which are implicated in the pathophysiology of prostatitis. However, direct scientific evidence for the efficacy of vitamin C specifically for prostatitis is sparse.
Most clinical studies and reviews regarding prostatitis focus on antibiotics, alpha blockers, and anti-inflammatory agents, with only occasional mention of vitamin C. There are a few small studies and anecdotal reports suggesting that vitamin C, sometimes in combination with other antioxidants or supplements, can provide some symptomatic relief, particularly in cases of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). These reports, however, are not robustly designed randomized controlled trials and often involve multiple interventions, making it difficult to isolate the effect of vitamin C.
