Zinc is an essential trace element that plays a crucial role in numerous biological processes, including immune function, DNA synthesis, and cell division. Its connection to prostate health has been the subject of scientific investigation. The prostate gland contains some of the highest concentrations of zinc in the male body, and zinc is involved in regulating the growth and function of prostate cells. Several observational studies have found that men with prostate disorders, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer, often have lower zinc levels in prostate tissue compared to healthy controls. Experimental studies suggest that zinc may inhibit the activity of 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme involved in the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone associated with prostate enlargement. However, clinical evidence on the efficacy of zinc supplementation for prostate health is mixed. While some small studies report improvements in symptoms of BPH or lower risk of prostate cancer progression with adequate zinc intake, others have found no significant benefit, and a few suggest excessive zinc supplementation could increase risk for advanced prostate cancer. As such, while there is a biological rationale and some supporting evidence for zinc's role in prostate health, high-quality randomized controlled trials are limited, and routine supplementation is not universally recommended except in cases of deficiency. The evidence base is moderate but not definitive.
