Zinc is used to support or treat PMS Type A (anxiety-dominant premenstrual syndrome) based on emerging scientific evidence. Several studies have investigated the role of zinc in alleviating premenstrual symptoms, particularly mood-related symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, and emotional instability, which characterize PMS Type A. Zinc is an essential trace element involved in neurotransmitter synthesis, hormone regulation, and modulation of the central nervous system, all of which are relevant to PMS pathology.

Clinical trials and observational studies have found that women with PMS often have lower serum zinc levels compared to those without PMS. Supplementation with zinc (often at doses of 30-50 mg daily) has been shown in some randomized controlled trials to reduce the severity of PMS symptoms, including mood swings, anxiety, and irritability. The mechanism is thought to involve zinc’s influence on neurotransmitters such as serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), both of which play roles in regulating mood and anxiety.

While the evidence is promising, it is not yet definitive. Most studies have small sample sizes and some show only modest benefits. Nonetheless, zinc's use for PMS—especially the emotional and anxiety-related symptoms of Type A—has a reasonable scientific basis, and it is increasingly recommended as an adjunct to traditional treatments. However, more large-scale, high-quality trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and determine optimal dosing.
