Evidence supporting the use of: Chamomile
For the health condition: Perspiration (excessive)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla or Chamaemelum nobile) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for a variety of ailments, including as a mild sedative, anti-inflammatory, and for digestive complaints. In European and Western herbal traditions, chamomile is sometimes referenced as a "diaphoretic"—an agent believed to induce mild perspiration and thereby help "break a fever" or support the body’s natural cooling processes. This traditional use is based more on historical herbal texts and folk practices than on robust scientific studies. While chamomile contains compounds such as apigenin and bisabolol with known anti-inflammatory and calming effects, there is little direct scientific evidence that supports its use specifically for treating or regulating excessive perspiration (hyperhidrosis). Most modern research focuses on its benefits for anxiety, sleep disorders, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Thus, while its historical use as a diaphoretic is documented, the evidence for effectiveness in managing excessive perspiration is minimal, and it is not a standard or widely recommended treatment for this condition in conventional or evidence-based alternative medicine.
