Zinc is essential for cellular function, protein synthesis, and enzyme activity, and it is present in significant concentrations in saliva. Research has shown that zinc deficiency can lead to alterations in the structure and function of salivary glands, resulting in symptoms such as dry mouth (xerostomia) and reduced saliva production. For example, studies have demonstrated that individuals with low zinc levels may experience hyposalivation, and zinc supplementation has been explored as a therapeutic approach for managing xerostomia, particularly in populations with chronic diseases or after radiation therapy to the head and neck.
Furthermore, zinc ions have been shown to have antimicrobial properties, which may contribute to maintaining oral health by reducing bacterial growth in the oral cavity.
