Zinc plays an important role in overall health, including the function of the parathyroid glands, which regulate calcium and phosphate balance in the body. Several studies have shown that zinc is involved in the synthesis and secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH), as well as in the cellular mechanisms of the parathyroid glands. Animal research has demonstrated that zinc deficiency can impair PTH secretion and disrupt calcium homeostasis. For example, some studies in rats have shown that low zinc intake can reduce PTH levels and lead to disturbances in bone metabolism. However, direct clinical evidence in humans linking zinc supplementation to improved parathyroid function or treatment of parathyroid disorders is limited. Most human research focuses on zinc’s role in bone health, immune function, and enzymatic processes, rather than on the parathyroid glands specifically.

While there is biological plausibility and some experimental evidence supporting zinc’s involvement in parathyroid physiology, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, zinc is not a standard therapy for parathyroid disorders, but adequate zinc intake is considered important for maintaining general endocrine and metabolic health. The evidence justifies a rating of 2, reflecting biological relevance and preclinical data, but limited direct clinical validation for zinc supplementation specifically targeting the parathyroid glands.
