Ligusticum wallichii, also known as Chuanxiong, is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. Its primary historical uses are to promote blood circulation, dispel wind, and alleviate pain, particularly in cases of headache, menstrual disorders, and cardiovascular issues. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Chuanxiong is sometimes described as having effects that could be interpreted as supporting aspects of the "parasympathetic nervous system," such as calming, relaxing, or regulating internal organ function. However, these interpretations are rooted in TCM theory rather than direct correlation to the Western concept of the parasympathetic nervous system.
Modern scientific research on Ligusticum wallichii has focused mainly on its anti-inflammatory, vasodilatory, and neuroprotective properties. While some studies suggest it can promote cerebral blood flow and has mild sedative effects in animal models, there is limited direct evidence linking it to specific activation or support of the parasympathetic nervous system in clinical or experimental settings. Most uses for "nervous system support" are extrapolated from its traditional roles in calming and pain relief, not from robust biomedical studies. Thus, the justification for its use in supporting the parasympathetic nervous system is mainly traditional, with modest supporting evidence, but not strong direct scientific validation.
