Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pumpkin, particularly its seeds, has been traditionally used in various cultures to support women’s reproductive health, including the ovarian system. The rationale is often linked to the presence of nutrients like zinc, vitamin E, and phytoestrogens, which are believed to play a role in hormone balance and overall reproductive function. In traditional herbal and folk medicine, pumpkin seeds have sometimes been recommended to help regulate menstrual cycles and ease menopausal symptoms, both of which involve ovarian health.

However, scientific validation for pumpkin’s direct support of the ovaries is limited. Some small studies and animal research suggest pumpkin seed oil may have a mild effect on hormonal balance or menopausal symptoms, possibly due to its phytoestrogen content, but these findings are preliminary and not specific to ovarian function per se. There is a lack of robust clinical trials or mechanistic research directly linking pumpkin or its seeds to improved ovarian health or function. Thus, the use of pumpkin for this purpose is primarily rooted in tradition and supported by a plausible, but mostly unproven, nutritional rationale rather than strong scientific evidence.
