Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Magnesium is scientifically recognized as an important mineral for bone health, including in the context of osteoporosis. Magnesium plays a crucial role in bone formation, influencing the activities of osteoblasts and osteoclasts (cells responsible for bone building and resorption, respectively), as well as impacting the regulation of parathyroid hormone and vitamin D, both of which are essential for maintaining healthy bone density. Epidemiological studies have shown that low dietary intake or serum levels of magnesium are associated with lower bone mineral density (BMD) and an increased risk of fractures, particularly in postmenopausal women and older adults.

However, while observational studies indicate a correlation between adequate magnesium status and improved bone health, interventional studies (such as randomized controlled trials) provide less consistent evidence. Some clinical trials suggest that magnesium supplementation can slow bone loss or modestly improve BMD, but others show little to no effect, possibly due to differences in participant populations, baseline magnesium status, and supplementation protocols. The evidence does not yet clearly demonstrate that magnesium supplementation alone is a primary treatment for osteoporosis, but it does highlight the importance of avoiding magnesium deficiency as part of an overall bone health strategy.

Current osteoporosis management guidelines emphasize adequate intakes of calcium, vitamin D, and other nutrients—including magnesium—for optimal bone health. Therefore, while magnesium is not a standalone therapy for osteoporosis, its role is scientifically validated as a supportive factor in bone maintenance and fracture prevention.
