Evidence supporting the use of: Green tea
For the health condition: Oral Surgery
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has garnered scientific interest for its potential role in supporting oral surgery outcomes, primarily due to its bioactive polyphenols—especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Several studies have explored green tea's antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, which may be beneficial for wound healing and infection prevention in the oral cavity. In particular, in vitro studies demonstrate that green tea extracts can inhibit the growth of oral pathogens such as Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis, both of which are implicated in post-surgical infections and periodontal disease.
Clinical research, though limited, provides some supportive evidence. For instance, randomized controlled trials have shown that using green tea mouthwash or topical green tea extracts after dental extractions can reduce bleeding, pain, and inflammation, and may promote faster healing of oral mucosal wounds. The proposed mechanisms include enhancement of collagen formation and reduction of oxidative stress at the surgical site. Additionally, green tea's astringent properties can assist in hemostasis, which is important immediately post-surgery.
While promising, most studies are small and often lack long-term follow-up. The overall scientific evidence rates around 3/5: suggestive but not yet definitive. Nevertheless, given green tea's safety profile and the biological plausibility of its effects, it is increasingly being integrated as an adjunct in oral surgical care, particularly in the form of rinses or topical applications.
