Zinc has been investigated for its role in various neuropsychiatric disorders, including Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), primarily due to its influence on neurotransmitter systems and neuroinflammation. Zinc is an essential trace element involved in modulating glutamatergic and serotonergic neurotransmission, both of which are implicated in the pathophysiology of OCD. Some studies have found lower zinc levels in individuals with OCD compared to healthy controls, suggesting a possible link between zinc deficiency and symptom severity. Additionally, zinc may act as a natural NMDA receptor antagonist, potentially reducing glutamate-mediated excitotoxicity, which has been hypothesized to contribute to OCD. There are a few small clinical trials and case studies where zinc supplementation has been added to standard OCD treatments like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These studies have suggested that zinc may have an adjunctive benefit, leading to greater symptom reduction compared to SSRIs alone, especially in treatment-resistant cases. However, the sample sizes are small, and the studies are not always rigorously controlled. Overall, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary clinical evidence supporting zinc supplementation as an adjunctive treatment in OCD, the quality and quantity of evidence are limited. Larger, high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed before zinc can be recommended as a standard part of OCD management.
