Magnesium is justified for use in supporting or treating "nervous exhaustion" based on scientific evidence, though the strength of this evidence is moderate. "Nervous exhaustion" is not a formal medical diagnosis but often refers to symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, and muscle weakness—many of which overlap with conditions like stress, anxiety disorders, and chronic fatigue. Magnesium plays a crucial role in the regulation of the nervous system and is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, including those that influence neurotransmitter release and stress response.

Several clinical studies have demonstrated that magnesium supplementation can help reduce symptoms of anxiety, improve sleep, and support overall nervous system health. For example, a 2017 systematic review (Boyle et al., Nutrients) found that magnesium supplementation had a beneficial effect on subjective anxiety in both mild anxiety and premenstrual syndrome. Another study (Abbasi et al., 2012, Journal of Research in Medical Sciences) showed that magnesium supplementation reduced subjective stress and improved sleep quality.

However, while evidence supports the benefit of magnesium in relieving some symptoms associated with "nervous exhaustion," high-quality, large-scale trials specifically targeting this syndrome are limited. The evidence is stronger for magnesium's role in mitigating stress, mild anxiety, and sleep disturbances rather than for a loosely defined syndrome of "nervous exhaustion." Nonetheless, magnesium deficiency is common and can manifest as nervous irritability and fatigue, further justifying its supplementation when deficiency is suspected.
