Evidence supporting the use of: Trace minerals
For the body system: Nerves
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Trace minerals, such as zinc, copper, selenium, iron, and manganese, are scientifically recognized as essential for the healthy functioning of the nervous system. These minerals play critical roles in neurotransmitter synthesis, nerve impulse transmission, and protection against oxidative stress in neural tissues. For example, zinc is involved in modulating synaptic activity and plasticity, while copper is necessary for the function of enzymes that maintain myelin sheaths and neurotransmitter metabolism. Iron is required for proper myelination and dopamine synthesis. Deficiencies in these trace elements have been linked in scientific studies to neurological symptoms, cognitive decline, and developmental delays. A 2017 review in "Nutrients" journal summarized evidence connecting trace mineral status to cognitive function and neurodevelopment. Furthermore, selenium acts as a cofactor for antioxidant enzymes that protect neurons from damage. While supplementation is only beneficial in cases of deficiency and excessive intake can be harmful, the scientific consensus is that adequate dietary intake of trace minerals is critical for nervous system health. However, there is limited evidence that supplementation beyond recommended amounts provides additional benefit in healthy individuals. Thus, the use of trace minerals to support the nervous system is justified based on well-established scientific evidence regarding their essential roles in neural physiology.
