Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for alleviating gastrointestinal discomfort, including nausea and vomiting. Historical records from ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman cultures document its use as a remedy for digestive disturbances. In traditional European herbal medicine, chamomile tea is commonly recommended for nausea, stomach upset, and mild vomiting, especially in children and during pregnancy. The presumed mechanisms include chamomile's mild sedative and anti-inflammatory effects, which may help relax the digestive tract and reduce spasms or irritation that can trigger nausea.

Scientific evidence supporting chamomile for nausea and vomiting is limited and generally of low quality. A few small studies and reviews suggest a potential benefit, particularly in combination with other herbs, but results are inconsistent and often confounded by the use of multi-herb formulas. A 2016 systematic review identified very limited clinical data specifically for chamomile's effect on nausea and vomiting, though some studies in cancer patients and pregnant women reported modest improvements. The active constituents, such as apigenin and bisabolol, may contribute to gastrointestinal soothing, but robust, high-quality clinical trials are lacking. Thus, while chamomile’s use is primarily justified by tradition, scientific validation remains limited, and further research is needed to clarify its efficacy for this indication.
