Folate (vitamin B9) is a water-soluble B-vitamin essential for DNA synthesis, cell division, and growth, which are fundamental processes for healthy nail development. Scientific evidence confirms that folate deficiency can lead to various dermatological manifestations, including alterations in nail health such as nail pigmentation changes, brittleness, and slowed growth. Some case reports and small studies have documented improvement in nail abnormalities after correcting folate deficiency. However, the relationship between folate supplementation and improved nail health in the general population (those without deficiency) is not strongly supported by robust clinical trials. Most evidence comes from observational data or studies focusing on individuals with clear folate deficiency, rather than healthy subjects seeking cosmetic nail benefits. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale for using folate to address nail issues caused by deficiency, its role in promoting nail health in otherwise healthy individuals remains uncertain. For this reason, the evidence is moderate and best supported in the context of deficiency correction, rather than as a general nail-strengthening supplement.
