Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, has some scientific basis for supporting the muscular system, though its role is not as prominent as for other systems like the immune system. Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis, a protein that is a major component of connective tissues, including tendons and ligaments, which indirectly supports muscular health. It also acts as an antioxidant, helping to reduce oxidative stress generated during intense exercise, which may aid in muscle recovery. Some studies suggest that vitamin C supplementation can decrease markers of muscle damage and soreness after exercise, though results are mixed and often context-dependent. There is limited evidence suggesting that vitamin C might help reduce the risk of muscle loss in the elderly, possibly due to its role in reducing oxidative stress and supporting collagen maintenance. However, there is currently no robust evidence that vitamin C supplementation enhances muscle strength or growth in healthy individuals. Most benefits pertain more to tissue repair and recovery than to direct effects on muscle mass or strength.
