Zinc has been investigated for its potential role in mood regulation, and there is some scientific evidence supporting its use in managing mood swings, though the evidence remains moderate and not definitive. Zinc is an essential trace element involved in numerous enzymatic and cellular processes, including neurotransmitter function and synaptic plasticity in the brain. Several studies have noted that individuals with mood disorders, such as depression or bipolar disorder, often exhibit lower serum zinc levels compared to healthy controls. Supplementation with zinc has been shown in some clinical trials to improve symptoms of depression, which are often accompanied by mood swings. For example, adjunctive zinc supplementation has demonstrated a modest benefit in reducing depressive symptoms in randomized controlled trials.

However, evidence directly examining zinc supplementation specifically for mood swings, as opposed to broader mood disorders, is limited. Most research focuses on depression or bipolar disorder as a whole, rather than the symptom of mood instability itself. There is a plausible biological mechanism, as zinc modulates neurotransmitters like serotonin and glutamate, which are implicated in mood regulation.
