Fish oil, rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (primarily EPA and DHA), has been studied for its effects on mitochondrial health, although the evidence is moderate rather than conclusive. Scientific research indicates that omega-3 fatty acids may support mitochondrial function by improving membrane fluidity, reducing oxidative stress, and influencing mitochondrial biogenesis. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that fish oil supplementation can enhance mitochondrial efficiency and reduce markers of mitochondrial dysfunction, particularly in tissues such as the heart, brain, and skeletal muscle. These effects are thought to arise from the incorporation of EPA and DHA into mitochondrial membranes, leading to improved electron transport and reduced production of reactive oxygen species.

In humans, evidence is less robust but suggests potential benefits in certain populations. Some clinical studies have reported improvements in mitochondrial function and reduced fatigue in patients with metabolic or neurodegenerative disorders following omega-3 supplementation. However, large-scale randomized controlled trials in healthy individuals are lacking, and the evidence remains insufficient to make strong clinical recommendations for fish oil as a direct mitochondrial support supplement. Overall, while preclinical data are promising and suggest a mechanistic rationale, definitive human data are limited, warranting a moderate evidence score.
