Zinc has been investigated for its potential role in supporting menstrual health, particularly in cases of menstrual irregularity. The rationale stems from zinc’s involvement in numerous enzymatic reactions, including those that regulate hormone production and immune function. Some small clinical studies and observational research suggest that zinc supplementation may help alleviate menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) and may have a role in hormone regulation, which could, in theory, impact menstrual regularity. For example, a few studies indicate that women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)—a common cause of irregular periods—often have lower zinc levels, and supplementation may modestly improve aspects of their condition. However, evidence directly supporting zinc’s use specifically for treating or correcting menstrual irregularity is limited and largely extrapolated from its broader effects on reproductive hormones and inflammation. A handful of trials report improvements in menstrual symptoms, but robust, large-scale randomized controlled trials are lacking. Most positive findings are preliminary and involve small sample sizes or focus on related symptoms rather than menstrual regularity itself. There is no strong historical tradition of using zinc for menstrual concerns, as its application is more recent and based on evolving insights into micronutrient deficiencies and reproductive health. In summary, while there is emerging scientific interest and some low-level evidence for zinc’s potential benefit in menstrual irregularity, the overall quality and quantity of supporting research are limited. Zinc should not be considered a primary or standalone treatment for menstrual irregularities without further scientific validation.
