Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in numerous physiological processes, including those related to the male reproductive system. Scientific studies have shown that magnesium plays a role in testosterone biosynthesis, spermatogenesis, and protection against oxidative stress in testicular tissue. Low magnesium levels have been associated with reduced testosterone levels and impaired semen quality. Some clinical trials and observational studies suggest that magnesium supplementation can help maintain normal testosterone levels, particularly in physically active men or those who are magnesium deficient. Additionally, magnesium is known to counteract oxidative stress, which is a contributing factor in male infertility. However, while there is a reasonable body of evidence supporting magnesium’s importance in reproductive health, direct intervention studies specifically targeting male fertility outcomes are limited. Most findings are based on associations, animal studies, or studies in populations with magnesium deficiency.
