Platycodon root, also known as Platycodon grandiflorus or "jie geng" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use, particularly in East Asian herbal traditions. In TCM, it is often utilized to "open up the lungs," "dispel phlegm," and "promote the discharge of pus," which is why it is sometimes included in formulas for sore throat, cough, and respiratory infections. Importantly, it is also used in some traditional formulas for conditions characterized by swollen glands or lymph nodes, particularly when these are thought to result from "heat-toxin" or suppurative processes (such as abscesses). Despite its traditional usage for these symptoms, there is limited direct scientific evidence to support platycodon root's efficacy in treating swollen lymph nodes specifically. Some pharmacological studies have demonstrated that components of platycodon root (notably saponins) possess anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically play a role in modulating immune responses and reducing swelling. However, these effects have been primarily observed in vitro or in animal studies, and have not been directly validated in clinical trials focusing on lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph nodes) in humans. In summary, the use of platycodon root for swollen lymph nodes is primarily justified by traditional usage, with low to moderate indirect support from preclinical research. There is a lack of robust clinical evidence directly substantiating this indication.
