Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) has been studied for its antioxidant properties, which are hypothesized to help protect lung tissue from oxidative damage caused by pollutants, cigarette smoke, and inflammatory processes. Some epidemiological studies have shown associations between higher vitamin E intake and improved lung function or reduced risk of certain lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. For example, observational data suggest people with higher vitamin E intake may have slightly better spirometric measures of lung function. However, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have produced mixed results, and most have not shown significant benefits for supplementation in preventing or treating lung diseases in the general population.
Animal and cell studies support the idea that vitamin E can reduce oxidative stress in lung tissue, but translating these findings to humans has proven challenging. Some research indicates that vitamin E supplementation might be beneficial in populations exposed to high levels of air pollution or in smokers, but again, the evidence is not robust.
Overall, while vitamin E is essential for general health and supports immune function, current human clinical evidence is insufficient to strongly recommend it specifically for lung health. The use of vitamin E for lung support is based primarily on its theoretical antioxidant effects and weak associations in observational studies, rather than strong, consistent clinical trial data.
