Vitamin E is an antioxidant that has been investigated for its potential role in supporting lung health. Scientific evidence suggests that vitamin E, particularly in its alpha-tocopherol form, helps protect lung tissue from oxidative stress caused by environmental pollutants, smoking, or inflammatory processes. Some observational studies have linked higher dietary intake or blood levels of vitamin E with better lung function and a lower risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. For example, a large prospective study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (2002) found that higher vitamin E intake was associated with a modest reduction in the risk of developing COPD among women. Another trial (Women's Health Study, 2010) observed a slight reduction in the risk of chronic lung disease among women supplementing with vitamin E, though the effect size was small.

However, randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have generally found inconsistent or limited benefit from vitamin E supplementation in improving lung health or preventing lung diseases. Some studies even suggest potential risks at high doses. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and some supporting epidemiological evidence, the overall quality and consistency of the data are moderate at best. Vitamin E is not a primary therapy for lung conditions, but its antioxidant properties provide a plausible, though not strongly proven, benefit for lung health.
